Alex's April Pleasantries

Sigh. Once again we're late on these bloody monthly charts, and don't even ask where Web Mix 003 is (actually, ask/pester Ben, since he's supposed to have it done by now...). It's been a crazy month, and it seems people have actually been listening to our mixes (yay), what with us going over our bandwidth amount by ridiculous amounts. We had to stop streaming though, because basically it's goddamn expensive and we're poor as fook, but they're all still available to download if you're yet to hear them.

But yeah, music-wise it's been great, and I'm currently wearing out:

1. Talking Heads - Making Flippy Floppy (Jellybean Remix)

Lovely remix which I'd never heard before, and thankfully to the 'Rare 12"s' compilation am now a proud owner! God I love Talking Heads. I might just do a solid hour of them in my hour long solo set, thats how much I love them. Lots.

2. Delia Gonzalez & Gavin Russom - Relevee (Carl Craig Remix)

Yeah so it's an obvious bloggers choice (haha sounds like a kind of cheese), but fuck it, I like it! Still need it on vinyl though...yeah DFA I'm looking at you.

3. Who Made Who - Out The Door (Superdiscount Remix)

After downloading this, promptly forgetting about it and then asking around for what I thought was a Zombie Nation track (thanks to Tiga's dodgy Essential Mix tracklist), somebody kindly pointed out it was something I already had. I'm an idiot. I got there in the end though, right? Lovely beefy remix from top french geezer Etienne De Crecy.

4. Padded Cell - Konkorde Lafayette

The AA Side (yeah, didn't deserve to be merely a B Side) of the recent 'Are You Anywhere?' 12" really is sublime. The drums, the bass, the trumpets! Padded Cell sound like the bastard love-child of the Emperor Machine and DFA. Yeah, that means good, you philistine.

5. Skream - Lightning

I honestly thought that Skream wouldn't be able to follow up Midnight Request Line (every DJs 'I'm down with the kids' record these days). True, this isn't quite as catchy or anything, but it's SO GOOD in a whole different way. If you read my last blog post, you'll know what this I'm on about. Fassy.

6. Teenage Bad Girl - Hands Of A Stranger

Oops I did it again. Here I am with the 'repeating of tracks on previous charts' lameness. This is amazing though! Honest! It's like after every cavernous breakdown it morphs into something else! It's like SebastiAn if he got a little bit sloppy and bored making a track and decided to muck about a bit, try and copy some Daft Punk choruses midway through, and then flip out with a spaced stadium rock guitar solo at the end. Fucking quality.

7. Aphex Twin - Bucephalus Bouncing Ball

Ok, this is NO WAY new, but I just finished the Warp Labels Unlimited book and it got me all misty eyed and clamouring for the good old Warpness that we all know and love. Autechre, BOC, Pearsquasher (ha)... Fuck me, 'BBB' is like rocket science with drums and synths. I like putting my speakers at either corner of my room and just standing in the middle at the bit where it sounds like the bouncing ball is travelling from one to the other. THE SOUND GOES THROUGH YOU. I swear it's weird. Go out and buy all his records because frankly, his talent scares me out of my skin and I fear for our safety.

8. Young Dot - Bonanza / Skepta - Duppy

A couple more tracks which I pretended to know about in the Grime & Dubstep post below. Erm, I kind of said why I like them there, so do me a favour and read that. Not to sound rude or anything, but it just makes sense, right? I'm saving these precious 1's & 0's for something else. Something secret. Ha.

9. Mystery Jets - You Can't Fool Me Dennis (Vicarious Bliss Remix)

I'll admit it, even though I had the Justice remix, I bought this blindly because (A) Its got a Zongamin remix, and Zongamin are like my favorite thing in music right now. (B) It's the Mystery Jets and (C) Because it's a 10". 10"s are like the perfect size for a record. A little more compact than a 12" and not as annoying to mix with as a 7". Just right. But anyway, the Zongamin remix is really good, but seeing as I'm all electro at the moment I'm feeling the Vicarious Bliss remix right now. Bleepy, kicky, bassy.

10. Low Budget - Crazy Eye Killa

Haha. Yeah this cracks me up. That was me laughing. Sure it's got bounce, and ticks all the right boxes for the Vice reading Grindie (shudder) kids out there, but then it drops into slapstick comedy sample loops complete with 'Motherfucker whip this out. Motherfucker whip this out. Motherfucker whip this out.' over the top. Seriously, if you listen to this with a straight face you've got a botox overdose. I do actually really like it, otherwise why would I put in my top 10? I like music that makes me smile. And music that makes me smile and jump up and down like a berk is even better.

Now go buy some records or something.

can you put up an mp3 of the gavin and delia remix?? sayfe

yeah i have no idea wy you like lightening so much, of all the skream tunes that are about. I like him on a happier dub vibe, like you heard Blue Eyes, Irie, Dutch Flowers or Mi Love It? Those are great.

That Low Budget tune is named after a character from an episode of Curb Yr Enthisiasm. Boy betta kno !

Lol @ grindie kids

Bok, i can't put that gavin & delia track up because DFA aren't really happy about it being available yet. headphonesex posted it up a few days ago, but was asked to take it down.

as for Lightning, i agree, i don't know a lot of skreams stuff apart from MRL and Skreamizm, plus some random tunes, but i honestly think Lightning is fucking amazing. thats all there is to it!

and as for Crazy Eye Killa, i reckon it samples Curb Your Enthusiasm! theres some parts in it that could well be...

ps. will give your new mix a listen tomorrow ;)

Can't wait to get home from work and download that Talking Heads track too. Someone needs to do a remix of Slippery People.
